Supermodel and body-image activist, Ashley Graham (Twitter: @theashleygraham) has become the next new inspiration for Barbie. Mattel (Twitter: @Mattel) has partnered with the 29-year old model to introduce her doll iteration.
Following Graham’s request, the doll has been designed to closely resemble the model with special focus on thighs touching each other, round belly, arms and hips.
The doll was presented to Graham at Glamour’s Women of the Year Awards in Los Angeles, where she was honored for her activism for inclusivity in fashion.
The Ashley Graham Barbie is a part of the Mattel’s, Barbie “Sheroes” series, which has created one-of-a-kind capsule line to honor groundbreaking women including director Ava DuVernay (Twitter: @AVAETC), actress Zendaya Coleman, gymnast Gabby Douglas, and ballerina Misty Copeland (Twitter: @mistyonpointe).
Even though Mattel has no plans to sell the Graham doll, a lot of buzz and consumer demand may be able to change that as in the case of Copeland’s and DuVernay’s doll which will be available for sale in the holiday season along with Mattel’s fashionista line.
Mattel added three new body shapes to its fashionista line earlier this year along with 23 dolls with different skin tones and hairstyles last year.
